Update from Kyle Pilon, BIMES President

It was brought to my attention recently that we have not updated our website.  So, I write this letter to update you on the goings on at “the Hatchery”. Another quiet and beautiful summer has come and gone in our little corner of the forest.  And as the warmth, and the noise of big ski […]

Egg Take and Centennial Salmon Club

‘Twas a busy day at Mossom yesterday. Not only did we put 56,000 pink salmon eggs into our incubation system, but we spawned one of our Mossom cohos. The Centennial School Salmon Project club was there for its regular after school Wednesday work party. The students got a lesson from our DFO community advisor Sandie […]

Leeches from coho spawners

Mossom Creek Hatchery volunteers discovered a great many salmon leeches crawling about in the aluminum Capilano trough in which coho spawners are being held until they are ready to have their eggs and milt taken. The distinct movement of these annelids can be seen as they stretch and contract, attaching alternately with their anterior and […]

Centennial School Salmon Project – Nature of Things, 1983

Documentary, ‘Salmon in the Line’: In 1981, David Suzuki brought his Nature of Things TV show to the banks of Mossom Creek in Port Moody, British Columbia, to film a salmon enhancement project operated by student volunteers at Centennial Senior Secondary in Coquitlam. This after school club has been operating since 1976 and gave birth […]

Mossom Creek Estuary at Dusk

After an extended dry spell, an overnight has attracted many chum salmon to Mossom Creek in Port Moody, BC. Perhaps 100 have moved in so far on the high tide to spawn and they are still coming on low tide at dusk. This is two weeks later than normal.

Port Moody Mayor and Council Tour the Mossom Watershed

On Sunday May 19th, our volunteers were delighted to host a tour for the Mayor and Council of the City of Port Moody.  First they visited  Mossom Creek Hatchery itself which is located in Mossom Creek Park, Port Moody, adjacent to Bert Flynn Park.  At the hatchery they were introduced to this year’s coho fry […]

Fundraiser – Fish Quilt Donated to Mossom Creek Hatchery

Check out this spectacular fabric art piece created by local artist and hatchery volunteer, Lynne Kaempffer. It is crafted with a selection of batik materials in shades of blue and green evocative of our coastal waters. We are in the midst of a SILENT AUCTION on this and all proceeds will go towards the operation […]

Tailed Frogs in Mossom

The presence of tailed frogs in the Mossom Creek watershed  is a testament to Mossom’s excellent water quality and quantity.  Mossom Creek flows clear and cold year round.  Partially spring fed, it does not dry down significantly in summer.   Its largely intact forest canopy keeps the water well shaded and cool. Pacific Tailed Frogs are […]

Volunteer Profile – Jim Mattson – What a valuable guy!

At its February 2012 annual general meeting, the Port Moody Ecological Society recognized Jim Mattson’s many years of environmental volunteer service with a well-deserved life time membership. Jim has been serving in the capacity of PMES director for the water quality lab at Noon’s Creek Hatchery for about ten years. A busy volunteer, he has […]

End of the Year at Mossom Creek.

The Mossom watershed is beautiful in the winter season. If you arrive early on a nippy morning, you might see something quite special on some pieces of dead wood by the gravel roadside. This ephemeral phenomenon could be called ‘candy floss frost’ or ‘Santa Claus whiskers’. You might be able to suggest another name. This […]
